When I was a child in a little kid's world * My heart was the same as the one I have now * But it amazes me how much everything else has changed... Kate Miller-Heidke

Evolution: 24 myths and misconceptions

If you think you understand it, you don't know nearly enough about it.

It will soon be 200 years since the birth of Charles Darwin and 150 years since the publication of On the Origin of Species, arguably the most important book ever written...

And yet despite an ever-growing mountain of evidence, most people around the world are not taught the truth about evolution, if they are taught about it at all. Even in the UK, the birthplace of Darwin with an educated and increasingly secular population, one recent poll suggests less than half the population accepts evolution....

Most of us are happy to admit that we do not understand, say, the string theory in physics, yet we are all convinced we understand evolution. In fact, as biologists are discovering, its consequences can be stranger than we ever imagined. Evolution must be the best-known yet worst-understood of all scientific theories. So here is New Scientist's guide to some of the most common myths and misconceptions about evolution...New Scientist 16 APR 2008

Oh, threats of Hell and Hopes of Paradise!
One thing at least is certain--This Life flies;
One thing is certain and the rest is Lies;
The Flower that once has blown for ever dies.

Last night I was lucky enough to to witness probably the most spontaneously funny, amusingly whimsical and hilariously quirky performance I will probably ever see...so thank you Mr Noble.

A rather humble-looking pic has sparked an investigation by researchers into whether this photo is one of the oldest in existence. There is so little information surrounding The Leaf that scientists have never really got to the bottom of this one. Previously believed to be the work of one of the inventors of photography - William Henry Fox Talbot - in 1839, it may very well be traced as far back as the 1790s. Articulate 18 APR 2008

Do you ever live long enough?/ The crisp morning, your step brisk/ walking into its current/ humming breath, happy belly,/ a skinful of pleasure./ But like Crete/ this morning wont last/ your isle of lilies will blow up/ in a stinking roar/ your calm sea will curdle/ into catastrophe/ and the tape worm of horror/ will hatch its eggs./ There'll be nothing but morphine, black humour/ and prays for a shovel/ from a kind and curious future/ to guess what you were/ and dig you back.
